DEUS EX MACHINA '17 CL 75 CLOS S.JEAN
With its more subtle oak and layers of complexity, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is my favorite release here this year. Layers of dried spice accent the raspberries and cherries in this full-bodied, rich, velvety wine. It’s more complex and full-bodied than the Combe des Fous or the Sancto Santorum, longer on the finish, and extremely elegant.” — The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker Deep crimson. A broad, complex bouquet shows the qualities of cherry liqueur, boysenberry, incense, and candied lavender, along with a smoky mineral nuance that builds steadily in the background. It shows impressive depth and energy to the ripe red and blue fruit, floral pastille, and spice flavors, which become sweeter and livelier with aeration. It finishes extremely long and floral, with round, even tannins and an emphatic, spicy finish. This one seems to be built for the long haul.
